Private Jonathan Michael Berry, age 19 of Woodville, MI, stationed with United States Army, Alpha Company, 16th Ordinance Battalion, 2nd Platoon, Ruffriders at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2008 of natural causes.

Private Berry was born on September 16, 1988 in Grand Rapids to Keith Thompson and Tammy Berry and has been a longtime resident of the Woodville area. Jon joined the US Army and graduated from Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he was honored for expert marksmanship and was assigned to the 16th Ordinance Battalion in Aberdeen.

Jon was an avid golfer and was well known for his long drives off the tee at many of the golf courses in the Newaygo County. Jon also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Jon is survived by his parents, Tammy Berry of Grandville and Keith (Loraine) Thompson of Fremont; his grandfather and guardian since 1998, Lloyd “Buck” Berry of Woodville; his fiancé, Marla VerDuin of Muskegon, formerly of Fremont; great grandmother, Lois Eldred of White Cloud; brothers and sisters, Brian J. Thompson; Samantha J. Stokkers; Justin K. Thompson; Deverin S. Simons; Heather A. Thompson; Ricky L. Thompson; Ryan A. Berry; Nicole M. Thompson; Sierra R. Thompson; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Jon was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Marilyn Berry in 2007; paternal grandparents, Beverly Thompson in 2003 and V. Keith Thompson Sr. in 1988.
