Friends of Second Lieutenant Ewy recalled a former gymnastics coach as a kind, friendly man who encouraged discipline in his instruction.

“He was one of those people that you didn’t have to know him a long time for him to leave a lasting impression,” Kristen Squires, a friend, said.

Mrs. Squires and Dena Edwards met and knew Ewy who coached their children in gymnastics at Oklahoma Gold in Edmond until 2006.

“He had already served and then he came back and coached. He coached our boys while he was back and he’d already been to Afghanistan,” explained Kristen Squires.  Jered was very involved in his community and coached gymnastics to many children in the Oklahoma City area.

“He was coaching gymnastics while he was still in college. Gym was just kind of a side job while he could finish up school,” added  Dena Edwards. “I think the military was pretty much where his heart lies.”

Jered Ewy graduated from Putnam City North High School and received a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Oklahoma. Jered enlisted in 1998 and completed the Army Ranger course. Ewy joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 2003 serving as an instructor. In July 2010 he graduated from OCS as a Second Lieutenant. Jered Ewy was a man of integrity, discipline and honor who put everyone else first, and cared deeply about the men with whom he served. But above all else he was a devoted husband and father.

“This loss of life has shaken every member of the Oklahoma National Guard to their core,” said Major General Myles L. Deering, adjutant general for Oklahoma.  “We have lost two very brave men who once raised their hands and took an oath to defend our nation. They courageously gave everything they had to ensure our freedom and safety and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
