Peter Wang was last seen in his Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) uniform as the shooting started. The Brooklyn, NY born cadet yanked open a door that allowed dozens of classmates, teachers and staffers to escape. Peter Wang was unable to flee when the killer appeared and shot and killed him.

He was commended for his actions and described as a hero. At their respective funerals, Peter Wang, Alaina Petty, and Martin Duque were all posthumously honored by the U.S. Army with the ROTC Medal for Heroism. Peter Wang was buried in his JROTC Blues uniform. On February 20, he was given a rare posthumous admission to the United States Military Academy. Peter Wang was 15 years young. Peter Wang was determined to become a soldier.

He was like a brother to me and possibly one of the kindest people I ever met,” longtime friend Xi Chen added.

Peter loved being in the JROTC and wanted to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. He liked the Houston Rockets, hip-hop music, playing basketball and spending time with his friends. He is survived by his father Kong and mother Hui, his brothers Jason and Alex and extended family.

Friends and family said the bravery during the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week was a natural act for the 15-year-old U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet, who was always quick with a joke and eager to help others.

Strangers sent The Wang family military patches and coins, and veterans from around the state showed up to pay their respects at his funeral.
