A 19-year-old soldier from southeastern Indiana was killed by enemy fire while on a military base in Baghdad, the Department of Defense said. Private First Class Anthony P. Seig of Sunman died Saturday, after about a year in the Army and two months in Iraq as a military police officer, his mother said.
He took great pride in being an MP, his mother, Linda Seig, said Monday, the day after she was notified by the military of his death. He felt like what he was doing was important and it mattered. Seig was assigned to the 16th Military Police Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
As word of the death spread around the town of some 800 people, signs of support were put up, including one at a grocery store that said God bless you Tony Seig. He graduated last year from East Central High School and is also survived by two sisters.
Seig’s mother said he had talked with his girlfriend, Christy Werner, the day he died. It was a happy conversation, Linda Seig said. They were making plans to be married.
Don Stonefield, East Central’s football coach, said Seig was a disciplined player.
“He was willing to do whatever you asked and do it to the nth degree” Stonefield said.
According to Brigadier General Michael Tucker, Anthony P. Seig showed up at a recruiter’s office, declaring, I want to join the Army to serve my country.
“A wonderful man” is how Christy Werner described him. To a cousin, Erin Peter, he was an all-around great guy.
When Seig and Werner dated – “We liked to go out and eat and go dancing a lot she said. He savored steak and anything with pasta.”
According to his aunt, Vicki Jenkins, He liked to joke around, play pranks. Known for being the artist in the family, he also liked to write and tell stories. Three young nieces are devastated. He was so much fun that they just loved playing with him. They loved their Uncle Tony, said Jenkins.
Movies Seig loved included The Usual Suspects, Crash and The Godfather. Of the latter, his cousin, Erin Peter, said, He could recite it by heart. The Simpsons was the only TV show he watched.
He also is survived by his mother, Linda.
