Those who knew Daniel L. Meeks could describe him in one word: brave. A firefighter and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Meeks fought to save the lives of the American people his entire life. Marine L/CPL Daniel Meeks (age 31) passed on October 18th, 2010 of a brain tumor.

Lance Corporal Daniel Meeks was born in Brooklyn, New York, but lived in Madison for 17 years. Lance Corporal Daniel Meeks served in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the American Legion Post 53 of Madison-Florham Park. Meeks also was a recipient of a Class 3 Rescue Award while serving as a firefighter for the Clifton Fire Department. The Class 3 Rescue Award is awarded to the brave men/women who have distinguished themselves by their heroic actions in the line of duty. Chief Brian Mulligan described Corporal Meeks as a “good and decent man who earned the respect of good and decent men.”

When Lance Corporal Daniel Meeks returned from Iraq, he discovered he had a brain tumor. Daniel Meeks fought his brain tumor valiantly, but sadly the tumor won. Lance Corporal Daniel Meeks was the type of person who dedicated his life to helping others. He will be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.

In addition to his parents, Mary Edna and Jack, Corporal Meeks is survived by his sister, Mary and his two brothers John and Jay.
