John Quayle was a Chinese and Vietnamese linguist in the Air Force and passed away from cancer just before his graduation from Chinese at the Defense Language Institute (DLI). But they gave him his diploma posthumously because he was at the top of his class. We couldn’t be prouder. And I thank you.

John Anthony Quayle, born August 28, 1977, passed away at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Thursday, October 24. With his loving parents at his side, he left us early in the morning after a hard-fought and courageous battle with lymphoma.
Anthony was living in Monterey, CA doing what he loved, mastering Chinese at the Defense Language Institute as Senior Airman Quayle in the United States Air Force. He previously worked as a Vietnamese linguist at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, MD. At a memorial service in Monterey, Anthony’s friends, classmates, teachers and supervisors vividly remembered his sense of humor, love, and intense work ethic.
He is survived by his parents, Ed and Madeline Quayle, Littleton, CO; four sisters, Edie (Naui) Zambrano, Provo, UT, Laura (Trent) Nelson, Salt Lake City, UT, Maddie Sue Quayle, Atlanta, GA, Pat (Ethan) Wickman, Cincinnati, OH; loving brother, Ken Quayle, Provo, UT; nieces and nephews, Addy, Noah, Nathaniel, Camilla, Julia, Asher Anthony.
His family loved him more than words can express. Our lives are marked by his compassion and individuality. We thank him for bringing so much joy into our lives. We will miss Anthony dearly.
