Private First Class Kevin C. Thomson, and seven other soldiers were killed October 3, 2009 in Kemdash, Afghanistan when his combat outpost was attacked by enemy insurgents. His unit had been deployed for about six months and was based at Fort Carson. He had only been in the Army for a year and a half and was on his first deployment. He entered the army on May 1, 2008. Private First Class Thomson was part of Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. His unit was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Kevin Thomson was born in California and grew up in Reno, Nevada raised by his mother. Family was just the two of them and they were very close. He attended Wooster High School and the Academy for Career Education. He earned his GED, and lost 100 pounds before enlisting in the Army in April 2008. He had to work hard to convince his mother that the Army was the best thing for him. This Reno native loved his country.
Kevin was a young man full of spirit. He was a well-known prankster and if he thought he could scare you…he’d try. He had been known to fully enjoy scaring people half to death using masks, air horns or a whip on a hornet nest. He was also a hard worker and was employed at a grocery store while attending school.
Kevin changed into a man as he became a soldier. He was full of respect, and held himself respected as well. He earned military service honors which include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and Combat Action Badge. This young man touched many lives and was quietly there for many people.
