Michael Charles Chesna thought being a police officer was the best job in the world.
It was a dream that started when he was 5 years old, something he believed until he entered the police academy in 2012, and up until his death.
“Ever since I was 5 years old, I have wanted to be a police officer. At that time, I thought it would be a fun job,” SGT. Chesna wrote during the academy, in a letter dated August 6, 2012. “As I got older, I realized all the great work that police officers do in their community and how they help so many people.”
Despite the amount of sacrifice it takes to become and work as a police officer, Mike Chesna felt it was his calling. He was instilled with a sense that he had a responsibility to serve his country and community.
“To me, a police officer is the highest order of public servant,” the letter continued. “To me, being a police officer is a better job than being president of the United States. I really want to be able to help people and make an impact in my community.” He wrote that police officers must have the highest moral character and share a level of trust with their community.
Mike Chesna was a 1994 Weymouth High School graduate. He was a passionate student of criminal justice, and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University in 2004. SGT Chesna was a highly-decorated soldier, and a highly-motivated student according to Dr. Jack Green, former dean of criminal justice at Northeastern University.
He was a huge sports fan. He followed the Boston teams. He collected bobble heads, watches, baseball cards and football helmets. He was smart, generous and loved his family .
Just after 9/11, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve his country. He deployed to Iraq in 2007 and to Afghanistan in 2010. He is the recipient of The Purple Heart Medal and a Bronze Star. He next fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a Town of Weymouth police officer.
SGT Chesna was a loyal husband, a devoted father, a brother, an uncle, a soldier, a friend, a police officer, and an American hero and patriot
On Sunday, July 15, 2018, Weymouth Police Officer Michael Charles Chesna was killed in the line of duty.
