NO. R-225. JOINT RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF U.S. MARINE CORPS SERGEANT BRYON LANE OF WHITE RIVER JUNCTION (J.R.H. 164)

Whereas, proudly serving our nation as a member of the United States Marine Corps was White River Junction resident Bryon Lane’s long-held ambition, and
Whereas, he distinguished himself during his years as a student at Hartford High School, serving as both a co-captain on the school’s 1992 state championship football team and as student council president, and
Whereas, Bryon’s accomplishments on the football field led to his selection as a member of Vermont’s all-star Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl team, and
Whereas, he was also chosen as a participant in the highly-selective Boys State civic education program, and
Whereas, after graduating from Hartford High School, Bryon Lane commenced his college studies at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, and
Whereas, despite his outstanding and award-winning academic performance at Hartwick College, after completing his sophomore year, Bryon decided that his passionate desire to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps could wait no longer, and
Whereas, Bryon Lane enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of sergeant and being assigned to an elite helicopter detail that ferried then Vice President Gore and foreign dignitaries, and
Whereas, most recently he had been assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and
Whereas, on Monday, July 9, 2001, the CH-46 helicopter, on which he was serving as a crew chief, crashed near its home base, killing all on board, and
Whereas, his tragically premature death has greatly saddened his family and many friends in Hartford, and
Whereas, he was an outstanding young man who was deeply committed to serving his nation as a peacekeeper, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly is greatly saddened by the death of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Bryon Lane, and extends its sincere condolences to his parents Edward and Carol Lane, and to his sister Bethany Lane, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Edward and Carol Lane in White River Junction.
