Army SPC Alex Hernandez III, 21, died in Kandahar, Afghanistan according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii.

Hernandez enlisted in the Army in July 2009. He most recently served as a Door Gunner.

Before he came to Hawaii, he was a Test Equipment Operator and attended Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

SPC Hernandez’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and an Aviator Badge.

He is survived by his wife Tyasia Hernandez of Killeen; his mother, Traci Ortiz and father, Alex Hernandez, Jr.; siblings; and numerous other loving family and friends.
