SGT Dan was born August 4, 1983 in Norway to Wanda Kilgore and Ritchie Dan. SGT Corey was a 2001 graduate of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in June of that year.
Lynda Knowlton, a teacher at Oxford Hills High School, remembered Corey Dan, as being set on joining the military when he left school.
“He was gung-ho,” Lynda Knowlton said. “He was thrilled to go to the military.”
Corey was a generous, gentle, compassionate person. At school Corey made friends with a young lady. This friend, Lisa was suffering the affects of a severe concussion she got from a fall on the basketball court. She had dizzy spells, and uncertain balance. Corey saw Lisa in need and for a few months brought her to her classes. He walked her from door to door and from her locker to the bus until she was fully recovered. This was Corey always thoughtful and loyal.
Corey took these qualities into combat where care for others led him to become fast friends with Iraqi boys whose country and community were in such turmoil. He played, wrestled and roughhoused with the boys giving them the attention they needed and trying to make them feel good about themselves. Corey shared candy from home with the youngsters. Sharing his time and what he had defined Corey’s kindhearted nature.
SGT Dan was a gentle soul, a loving son, a big brother and a good friend to many.
Corey Alan Dan will be missed by all who knew him.
