SAN ANTONIO, TX, USA U.S. Army SPC, HHC, 2D SQUADRON, 5TH CAVALRY, 1 BCT, FORT HOOD, TX BAGHDAD, IRAQ 01/25/2007
Army Private First Class Darrell W. Shipp, 25, of San Antonio; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Jan. 25, 2007, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad.
Darrell was determined to fight in Iraq even though he was the only son and could have gotten an exemption. He joined the military in 2005 so he could better himself and be able to go to school.
Private First Class Shipp is survived by his mother, Regina; dad, Doyle, and four sisters, one of whom is also in the Army.
He was born in San Antonio but spent his last two years and graduated from Harlingen High School in 2000. Some of his early ambitions included racing and music. As a drag racer on Harlingen and San Antonio city streets and race parks, Darrell won many trophies.
But early in life Darrel taught himself to play the guitar and became very accomplished. He led his own band, Celebrate Tuesday, and opened for major bands. He had returned to San Antonio, working as a waiter and used car salesman. But he had a lot of dreams and felt the Army could help him realize some of them.
