CPL, 2nd Marine Division, Camp LeJeune, NC

Born on August 9, 1986 in Duluth, Minnesota, Gavin Kopponen grew up in the peaceful Belle Plaine area. Attending the Belle Plaine school system, Gavin proved himself to be a tough kid who was respected and self-reliant from a very early age, helping Gavin graduate, at the age of 18, from Belle Plain Senior High School in the class of 2004.

Gavin then went on to join the Marines, his calling. Gavin enlisted in 2008 and was successfully admitted into the Marine Corps. Gavin was successful in his training with his platoon and completed boot camp to become a full-fledged Marine. He then joined the 2nd Marine Division where he was sent to Afghanistan; there Gavin and his platoon experienced many horrors. Still, Gavin was determined to reach the rank of corporal, and he did so with his hard work and tough attitude. Once their deployment was over, Gavin and his division were sent back to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Gavin now rests in the peaceful grounds of Arlington National Cemetery in Fort Myer, Virginia and is survived by his parents, David and Barb of Belle Plaine as well as his twin sister, Amanda and her son Nathaniel of Belle Plaine, his sister, Cathy (Luke) of Belle Plaine, his fiancée Jade Ramirez of St. Paul, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and fellow Marines.
