Marine Corporal Ian Matthew Muller was killed while conducting combat operations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom around Sangin in Helmand province, Afghanistan on March 11, 2011. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.


Cpl. Muller joined the Marine Corps in December 2007, was promoted to Corporal in June 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan in January this year. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Ian Muller grew up in the tiny town of North Danville in north east Vermont. After being home-schooled and running track at the Danville School, Muller attended Lyndon State College from 2006-2007 before joining the Marines. In the tightly knit Danville community the Muller family was known for their participation at the Caledonia Farmer’s Market. Ian was well known for his willingness to go out of his way to help others and was always there to add his help as needed. His story continues to be told as hundreds posted on his Facebook wall and even more remembered his kindness back home. He is survived by his parents, Cliff and Susanne Muller of Danville; five brothers and one sister, grandparents , extended family and friends.
