Ian Williams McConnell, 24, of Woodbury, MN, an active duty Marine, died July 4, 2011.

SGT McConnell served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was an Explosive Ordinance Disposal technician. Ian was born to Elizabeth and Andy McConnell on April 4, 1987. He graduated from Hill-Murray School, Maplewood, MN in 2005.

SGT McConnell was compassionate and selfless and had a good sense of humor,” according to a proclamation issued by Governor Mark Dayton.

The Reverend Jerry Doherty remembered Ian McConnell as a warm, thoughtful young man.

SGT McConnell had recently been accepted into Marine Corps Special Operations Command.

He is survived by his loving mother, Elizabeth McConnell, father, Andy McConnell, his sister, Margaret “Meg” McConnell, grandfathers, John “Jack” Williams, M.D.of Grosse Pointe, MI and John McConnell, M.D. of Minneapolis and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

Ian McConnell was a loving son, brother and friend.
