Marine Corporal John Corey Tanner, resident of Columbus, was killed on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 by a roadside bomb during combat operations while serving in Iraq. on combat operations in Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the ed Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1 Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, California.

John graduated from Hallie Turner High School in Columbus. After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp and served his country honorably for over two years. He was twenty-one years old.

He is survived by his mother Melanie and father Henry Lee Tanner, and his wife Rheanna and two brothers, Lee and Brandon. Rheanna and John were expecting their first child.

John was the family’s prankster and enjoyed getting into trouble a little bit. His high school classmates remember him as fun-loving and a hit with the girls. John joined the Marines soon after high school and had served for two years. He had been with his deployed unit in Iraq for five months.

John was always ready to help his brother Marines and had considered being a career Marine. John loved what he was doing.
