Leopold F Damas

Lance Corporal Leopold F. Damas of Floral Park, New York is the son of Carol Blanc and the late Gerard Damas. He grew up in Jamaica, Queens area where he graduated from Newton High School in Queens before joining the Marine Corps in 2006.

He was a friendly and talkative guy whom everyone seemed to like. Leo was serving his 3rd deployment, having first served in Iraq in March 2007 through September 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He deployed again from July 2008 to February 2009.

In May of 2009 he was sent to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Leo loved being a Marine and he was honored for his bravery, determination and dedication to the Marine Corps. His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and various other personal and unit decorations.

Leo died at age 26 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In addition to his mother, he leaves two brothers, Frederick Damas and Gerard Damas Jr., two sisters, Kathleen Ivey and Magali (Maggie) Damas.
