SSG Scialdo was born on July 22, 1981 in Herkimer, NY and moved to Naples at an early age. Marc graduated from St. John Neumann Catholic High School in 1999 and from Edison State College in 2002.
Elizabeth Bennett, who has taught at St. John Neumann for 18 years, said she remembers Scialdo as someone who was always able to put others in a good mood.
“He was just very good-natured and well-liked,” she said. “He liked to smile and joke around.”
She went on to say “As a teacher, you see thousands of students, but Marc was just one of those kids who stood out.”
Marc was so moved by the tragedy of September 11, 2001, that he enlisted in the Army. Prior to his deployment to Afghanistan on December 7, 2012, Marc served his first tour of duty in Iraq from 2007 thru 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Marc and his wife, Kara were stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA when Marc deployed to Afghanistan.
May 23, 2015 SSG Marc Scialdo’s name was on my racing bib today at the “I Did The Grid” race in Northport, NY. Thank you for your sacrifice. You gave it all to allow us the freedom to run, and so we run for you. Thank you. East Northport, NY
January 27, 2014 Rest in peace, Marc. I have many good memories of Army basic at Fort Knox and then AIT at Fort Eustis with you and the rest of our fellow soldiers. It was a special time in my life and I feel blessed that you were a part of it. At AIT, I witnessed your outstanding character. You always did what was right and I could tell you’d be a good leader. I was greatly saddened to hear that you made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Army lost a good soldier and the world lost an even better man. To Marc’s family, please accept my condolences for Marc’s passing. He was a good man and he is missed. The world needs more people like Marc. Very Respectfully,Michael “Pops” Colangelo.
