Mark A Barbret

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI, USA U.S. Army PFC, HHC, 44TH ENGINEER BATTALION, 2D INFANTRY DIVISION (1ST MEF) APO AP, 96224 AR RAMADI, IRAQ 10/14/2004

Army Private First Class Mark A. Barbret joined the Army to provide financially for his 3 year old son, Christian.

“He always had a way of making people laugh at the silliest things. When I first got to 44th in Korea in March of 04 he was the first Soldier that got my attention. He had that mischievous look in his eye that made me think he would be a problem but he turned out to be the exact opposite. Always quick with a joke or a laugh and had the amazing ability to make you laugh at yourself. He was truly one of a kind and I am very proud to have known him and be able to say that I served along side such an amazing man and friend” said SSG David Spooner of Kannapolis, NC

Barbret, 22, of Shelby Township, Mich., died Oct. 14, 2004 when his Humvee was hit by a bomb in Ramadi, Iraq. He was based at Camp Howze, South Korea.

Scott Bottom met Barbret in Korea in late 2003. “He was very energetic and kept that huge smile on his face at all times.”

A quiet man with a fondness for cars, Barbret left for the military on Jan. 30, 2003, his son’s birthday. Barbret and Nicole Hale ended their relationship about a year earlier, but remained close. She said she will keep his memory alive for their son. “We’re going to make sure there are plenty of tapes and photographs around for him, so that there are lots of memories,” she said
