Sergeant Michael Egan was born on March 4, 1969 to William Anthony and Irene Egan. Michael was the second of four boys; older brother Tony and younger brothers, Patrick and Danny. He grew up in Pennsauken, New Jersey and served as an altar boy at St. Peter’s church in Merchantville. He attended Camden Catholic High School for two years and graduated from Pennsauken High School in 1987. From 1991-1999, Michael was in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in the Persian Gulf War, as well as in conflicts within Haiti, Liberia and Bosnia. In 1999, he returned home to live a civilian life and ended up marrying and having a family. In 2003, Michael enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard Reserves. In 2004 the family bought their first home in New Castle, Delaware.

In January 2005, Michael was sent to Mississippi and California for training. He was able to return home for ten days and then was deployed to Iraq along with the rest of his unit. He served in Iraq for a year before he was killed on September 19, 2005 when an explosive detonated near his military vehicle during a patrol. Two other soldiers died in the incident as well. Services for Michael were held at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Merchantville and he was buried with full military honors at Calvary Cemetery in Cherry Hill.

Michael was well remembered by many as someone who had a great smile and fabulous personality. His former vice principal said the following “He was a terrific kid. He was witty. He lit up a classroom. He came in the room and his personality was just golden.” He was also a very humble and often described as the epitome of peacefulness. He is survived by his wife Maria and their 3-year old daughter, Samantha.
