SGT Michael Joseph Smith was born on October 8, 1960 in Taiwan. The Dallas Police Department has been a very important part of Michael’s life for over 27 years. In those 27 years, he has received 85 commendations and awards.
Outside of the DPD, he enjoyed racquetball, ping pong, and playing on the Wii with his youngest daughter, Caroline. Michael also enjoyed landscaping with Caroline and Victoria. He and the girls always planted Gerber Daisies together. Michael also loved quiet time with his girls where he would read the Bible to and with them. A servant’s heart was very much a part of Michael. Along with serving the public, he also dedicated his life to working with at risk youth.
SGT Smith was preceded in death by father, William Joseph Smith, Sr and his mother, Yea Tieng Lai Smith. Michael is survived by his wife, Heidi; his daughters, Victoria and Caroline; his sister, Yea-Mei Mary Smith Sauer; and his brother, William Joseph Smith, Jr.
SGT Smith was shot and killed during a downtown protest in Dallas, TX on July 7, 2016.
