Bud and Anne Murphy honor their son yearly by presenting the 8th grade students at their local grammar school (St. Catharine’s in Blauvelt, NY) with pictures and stories about Michael. They tell about how he was not a very good student and really struggled with school. But through perseverance he later went on to become a pilot in the United States Marine Corps and fly for the President of the United States (President Clinton).
Each student then writes an essay about what it means to persevere. The Murphy’s then judge the essays picking 3 winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) and present them with a bond in memory of their son. It is presented at the end of the school year in the school auditorium. They give a total of $500. In the hallway of the school hangs a plaque where the story is told of the men who died. On this plaque the names of the winners are engraved each year.
