TEACHER, GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, PASTOR
06/17/2015, CHARLESTON, SC
Myra Thompson was born and raised in Charleston, SC. She graduated from Burke High School.
Myra leaves to mourn her a loving, devoted, and cherished husband, The Reverend Anthony Thompson, 3 children whom she cherished and many, many family members and friends. Myra Thompson achieved her goal of becoming a minister the very day she was killed. Myra Thompson was a retired public school teacher and guidance counselor who led the Bible study on June 17, 2015.
A devout Christian with a passion for underprivileged children, Myra Thompson began her adult life as a teen mother who went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from Benedict College in Columbia, and earned two Masters in Education degrees from The Citadel graduate college. She graduated in 1994 with a Masters of Education in Reading Education and graduated in 1999 with a Masters of Education in Secondary Counselor of Education. She devoted her career to working as an English teacher and guidance counselor in local public schools. The Citadel community joins many in the Lowcountry in mourning the loss of Mrs. Myra Thompson.
An immaculate task master, Mrs. Thompson served as head of Emanuel AME Church’s trustee board. The mother of two adult children, Kevin Singleton and Denise Quarles, she was working toward becoming an ordained minister and gave her first sermon at Emanuel during the Christmas season prior to her death.
Pastor Thompson was married to the Reverend Anthony Thompson, rector of Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church on Bull Street. He remembered the night she died, how she left the house so excited to teach the Parable of the Sower, a story about God casting seeds of faith onto the fertile soils of people like his late wife.
