November 30, 2016, Tacoma Police Officers Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez was murdered in a line- of-duty shooting during a domestic violence call.

Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez joined the Tacoma Police Department on July 6, 1999. Officer Gutierrez served the Tacoma Police Department for seventeen years. He had a service history that included deep experience in handling domestic violence calls. In domestic disputes, Officer Guiterrez was known as someone with a lot of success in deescalating this type of situation. He was a decorated officer having received several awards and unit citations. Officer Gutierrez received numerous commendations from the community he served, and supervisors and peers.

A woman who witnessed Wednesday’s shooting of Tacoma police Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez said he sacrificed himself to save his partner and the wife of the man who opened fire.

Tacoma police Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez was remembered for his sense of humor, integrity and ability to defuse volatile conflicts, all attributes that, by most accounts, made him a good cop. “He was very good at his job,” Chief Don Ramsdell stated.

“He’s a model police officer. He’s highly dedicated to his profession. He’s highly dedicated to his community, and he demonstrated that every time he came to work,” Chief Ramsdell added.

Officer Guiterrez spent most of his career patrolling the city’s East Side, where he was remembered by fellow officers and residents for his quick wit and easy-going manner. He was a 45-year-old father, and grandfather.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
