Sergeant First Class Robert J. Mogensen was born on February 17, 1978 and was a native of Leesville, Louisiana. Mogensen joined the Army after high school in 1995 and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina
He completed Infantry Training and Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia before being assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After completing Special Forces training, Ranger School and French language training he was assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group in October 2000. He served three tours in Afghanistan, one in Africa, and many more elsewhere. He received a Purple Heart for injuries suffered during his first tour in Afghanistan. On May 29, 2004 Robert and two other soldiers died in Kandahar when their vehicle hit a land mine.
His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab and the Special Forces Tab.
His aunt said, “Robert was such a loving and kind, fun person, and he loved his family and his country. You know, he was happy to be there.” Another friend said, “It was a difference of going to college or going into the armed service. He said he was going to do it and he did. God bless him for doing it.” Robert was a good husband and a good father. He is survived by his wife, Tanya, and three children, Joshua, 10, Vanessa, 6, and Leilani, 8 weeks.
