Jason “Jake” Moletzsky was one of seven Coast Guards and two Marines lost at sea on the evening of October 29, 2009. A Coast guard C-130 suffered a mid-air collision with a Marine AH-1W helicopter. The Air Station Sacramento rescue team was looking for a lost boater off the coast of California. Petty Officer 2nd Class Moletzsky was tragically taken from our lives at the age of 26. He was a proud member of the Search and Rescue team of the United States Coast Guard from Sacramento, California. He was born on August 18, 1983 .
“Jake was a Norristown, PA hero, born and raised here,” said organizer Rosalie Hetrick, who co-founded the race with Jake’s mom, Lisa Moletzsky, in 2014, an event that honors Coast Guards who have died in the line of duty since September 11, 2001. There are people world wide participating annually in road races, memorial walks, sports tournaments, etc. to pay tribute to the lost members of the Coast Guard.
In addition to serving his country, Jake Moletzsky enjoyed snowboarding, fishing and ice hockey, Rebecca Moletzsky, Jake’s sister explained. She hopes to grow his memorial fund to sponsor a program that would incorporate those sports to help needy children.
Rebecca said she hopes events like the basketball tournament remind folks of her brother’s dedication to help other people.
He was hilarious. He had the best sense of humor. He could bring you up even in the worst times,” Rebecca, said.
“He was genuinely a good, happy person,” she added. “He died doing what he loved.”
