HIT, IRAQ 11/28/2006

Army Corporal Jon-Erik Loney was killed in Iraq on November 28, 2006 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.  He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based at Baumholder, Germany.  The twenty-one year old soldier joined the Army in 2005 and knew he would probably go into combat.

A native of Morgan County, Corporal Jon-Erik Loney graduated from Danville High School in 2003.  Inspired by an intense belief in liberty and freedom, he joined the Army.  He graduated in 2003 from Danville High School.

Just about everyone who knew Jon-Erik appreciated his smile. Whenever you talked to him you count on two things:  an infectious smile and a conversation about music. One of his battle buddies noted that he was about the only one who could smile and make a positive out of the negative all around them.   A high school classmate noted that Jon-Erik was laid back, and loved playing his guitar.  In addition to smiles and guitar talent, Jon-Erik was an avid fisherman and an excellent ping pong player.  Those who ever engaged him in a match knew that they’d been expertly challenged at ping pong.

Jon-Erik’s many interests and principled way of life earned the respect and loyalty of those fortunate to regard him as a friend.  He was honored and awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and from his state, the Alabama Distinguished Service Medal for his courageous service.

Jon-Erik’s portrait is also located on Poster 5
