On October 28, 2010, Staff Sergeant Adam Lynn Dickmyer died at age twenty-six of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He served with the 2d Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) , Fort Campbell.
Prior to this assignment, Adam served in the Old Guard at Fort Myer, Arlington, Virginia for five years. He served as Commander of the Relief and Assistant Sergeant of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Staff Sgt Adam L. Dickmyer of Winston Salem, NC graduated in 2002 from Carver High School where he was an active participant of the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps Drill Team. He joined the Army in October of 2002 arriving at fort Campbell in November of 2009. From 2003 to 2009 he served at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery guarding the grave and training others for this honor. Adam was interviewed by author, Robert M. Poole for the 2009 book, On Hallowed Ground: The Story of Arlington National Cemetery. He also led or participated in inaugurations for presidents, the burials of high-ranking military officials, and other famous people. He was the lead pallbearer for the funeral of Senator Ted Kennedy. Adam deployed to Afghanistan in June 2010. His awards and decorations include, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutists Badge, Tombof the Unknown Soldier Identification Badge and Marksmanship Qualification Expert Badge. He leaves his wife Melinda, his father and mother, and a sister. Adam is survived by his wife, his parents and a sister. You couldn’t meet Adam without being touched in some way; and he had always had plans for military service. He wanted to fight for his beliefs and wanted to make a difference and he that’s exactly what he did.
